Many homes have counters made of granite or other stone material in kitchens and baths. How do we maintain granite? Easily and carefully. It doesn’t require much maintenance, but using the wrong products can damage the surface.
For counters, the preferred stone is granite, not marble, because marble is porous and easily damaged. Routine maintenance usually involves just wiping the granite with a damp cloth and perhaps a little detergent or detergent/mild disinfectant. Just make sure to choose a detergent or disinfectant that’s OK for cleaning stone. Buff with a clean soft cloth to restore the shine if there is any hazy residue.
What about hard water stains or whitish deposits around the kitchen sink? Carefully scrape the area with a flat razor blade scraper to remove these deposits. Don’t gouge the surface. You can also buff with very, very fine 0000 steel wool or synthetic steel wool.
For routine maintenance, you can use product-specific marble cleaner and related stone maintenance products from Granite Gold. Granite Gold makes excellent products for cleaning, maintenance and sealing stone.
For problem stains or rougher surfaces, clean the surface with a marble cleaning product. Lightly apply a sealer and then buff with a soft, clean cloth.
