Clean the Refrigerator Drain Pan to Prevent Odors

Do you own a refrigerator? Most refrigerators have a drain pan. It’s your job to clean it.

Modern refrigerators use a self-defrost system. (If you are old enough, you can remember defrosting the cooling coil in the refrigerator’s freezer compartment.) When the defrosting cycle occurs, the cooling coil is warmed to melt any accumulated ice. This happens automatically with modern refrigerators. Also, because refrigerator surfaces are cold, they collect moisture through condensation when warm room air enters the refrigerator. So where does all this water go?

M057 - Refrigerators - Clean Drain Pan

The water drains through a series of internal passages and tubes to a pan below the refrigerator. Once in the pan, the water evaporates harmlessly into the air of your home. If you spill something in the fridge, some of it will end up in the drain pan.

To access the pan, unplug the fridge, and then open the lower front access panel. You’ll find the dirty drain pain. You’ll also see the dirty condensing coils and fins below the refrigerator. You should clean the coils and the pan periodically according to instructions in the owner’s manual.
