Fix Squeaky Door Hinges With the Right Type of Lubricant

It’s so annoying when every time you open or close a door, it gives off a loud SQUEAK. The problem is corrosion that creates metal-on-metal friction. Eventually the door will be hard to move, and this can even damage the hinge or loosen the attachment between the door and the frame.

The fix is simple: lubricate the hinges with thin oil. Sewing machine oil, 3-IN-ONE oil or a similar light oil will do the trick. You don’t need a messy spray lubricant.

Hold a clean rag hand below the hinge, and place a few drops of light oil at the first joint on the top of the hinge. Don’t worry if oil runs down the side of the hinge – capillary action will draw it into the hinge. Use the rag to catch any drips and overruns.

Repeat this at each hinge. Then fully open and close the door several time to spread the oil inside the hinge. One final wipe will prevent any further drips. While you’re at it, this is a good time to lubricate all the hinges on all your doors to prevent future problems and prolong the life of the hinges.
