Wood floors have become very popular in homes. Nothing matches the quality, look and feel of a wood floor. But how should you maintain the surface?
The biggest enemy of wood floors is any small, abrasive particle that can be ground into the floor by shoes or furniture legs. Maintenance starts at the entrances to your home. Always use throw rugs that capture dirt, dust and grit. Taking off shoes is a good measure but not necessary if shoes are clean – just eliminate the grit.
Vacuum your wood floors on a routine basis, but don’t use a vacuum with a beater brush. For many homes, vacuuming once every week is enough. For floors that get heavy use from kids or pets, vacuum more often.
What about spills and sticky stuff? You can clean wood floors with a mild detergent like Bona Hardwood Floor Cleaner. Lightly spray the surface and then wipe with a clean, dry rag. Scrub visibly dirty or sticky areas with a damp rag. Never soak the floor, and never allow water into joints. For a major spill, remove any liquid as quickly as possible and then clean with a dampened rag and mild detergent.
